The ethos of the site should match the client. For example, all companies are different in the way they are run and the working environment of the workforce can vary a great deal.
If these good points can be conveyed in the design it makes the site that much more honest and instils a sense of trust with the clients.
Content is the next thing that is needed. Any images you wish to include need to be discussed, for example the images that will be used to display a product range and existing corporate identity and house style. This goes a long way to designing a site that marries the graphics to them. Text is also important. 'Fake' text can be used to fill in the gaps of a design aesthetically, but once text is drafted the actual style of the writing can influence the style of the site. Good design involves the content matching the graphics and writing has much the same emphasis on style as graphics do.
This is also the time when the brief can be written. This is a short document outlining what the job will entail and defining certain criteria. Each job is different so there is no strict format but they usually revolve around certain key issues.
