Simply put, you know the subject matter of your site better than the designer, the developer or indeed the automated search engine. What words would you want to type into a search engine for your site to appear in the list? What words can you envisage others typing into a search engine trying to seek out information that is on your site? It is also possible to tailor different meta names to each page of your site, as dependant on how the site is constructed it is not always the homepage that the user will enter your site on.

Over zealous attempts at promoting your site in this way can be counter productive though. The key principle of good promotion on the Internet is to be honest. Firstly the search engine will scan your web address. Hopefully this should contain relevant wording that pertains in some way to your website content, usually it being your name, a pseudonym, your company name or some distinct phrase that is the driving force of your marketing strategy. Then it will look at the title of the page for any further relevancies as to what the user initially typed (remembering specific titles can be given to specific pages). It is recommended that this should not exceed 60 characters in length. Next it will arrive at the invisible Meta information.
